  1. Shorty Said,

Vitamin D and Calcium when used together I heard works, however, you should not take them for long periods of time. I have a thyroid problem and I just take the prescribed medication that my doctor gives me. I find it helps a lot with my tiredness and lack of energy. I know at this point there are no know vitamins that are specifically suggested for thyroid.

The mineral Iodine is vital in the function of the thyroid gland and in the production of thyroxin. An excellent source is iodized salt.

Also, although cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage are usually healthy, they are goitergens and can block the uptake of iodine and are therefore not recommended for someone with thyroid problems.

As mentioned above, iodine supplementation in the form of Iodoral or Lugols is a good choice since thyroid hormones are primarily composed of iodine. The goal is to take 50 mg daily. Beware of the release of toxins, though, which taking iodine does. It could cause a headache or blemishes, but it does go away in a few days.

Another idea is l-tyrosine, which is a precursor to thyroid hormones. 1000 mgs.

B-vitamins are important for good thyroid function.

Make sure your cousin is taking Selenium, 200 mcg, which helps with conversion of T4 to T3.

Finally, if your cousin has true hypothyroidism, nothing can really help it the best unless its medication. And a much better choice is natural desiccated thyroid, aka Armour, Naturethroid.
